Is DisputeKit cheaper than credit-repair companies?+

Yes — the Free tier costs $0 and paid plans start at $19/mo (pricing TBD), versus typical $69–$150/mo ongoing for national credit-repair services. And the core action is identical: formal dispute letters mailed to the bureaus.

Can I dispute on my own for free?+

Absolutely — it's your federal right (FCRA §611), and you never need to pay anyone to do it. DisputeKit just removes the hard parts: finding what's disputable, citing the right law, using verified bureau addresses, and tracking the 30-day clock.

Is DisputeKit a credit-repair company?+

No. We're a software tool that helps you prepare your own dispute letters. We're not a law firm and this isn't legal advice. You review and mail your own disputes — which is exactly why there's no $100/month retainer.

How is this different from asking ChatGPT to write my letters?+

ChatGPT doesn't know the verified bureau mailing addresses, the dispute-reason structure, or the round-two process (Method-of-Verification requests, direct furnisher disputes under §623, CFPB escalation). DisputeKit builds the complete package — letters, enclosures checklist, 30-day tracker — and keeps your history in your account.

Bureau + furnisher letters

Formal §611 letters for Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion with verified mailing addresses — plus direct §623 disputes to the creditors themselves.

Round-two toolkit

If a bureau “verifies” anyway, generate a Method-of-Verification letter demanding they show their work — they must describe their procedure within 15 days.

30-day tracker

A personal timeline from mailing day to results day, saved in your account. Bureaus must finish investigations within 30 days of receiving your dispute (45 in some cases) — we count it down for you.

FAQ

Questions everyone asks

Is DisputeKit a law firm?+

No. DisputeKit is an educational document-assistance tool — not a law firm, and nothing here is legal advice. You review, sign, and mail your own disputes. For complex situations (identity theft, mixed files), we point you to free official resources like IdentityTheft.gov and encourage consulting a consumer attorney.

Can disputing hurt my credit score?+

Filing a dispute is your federal right, and the act of disputing doesn't lower your score — the bureau simply marks the item “in dispute” while it investigates. What can change your score is the outcome: if inaccurate information is corrected or removed, that can help; there's no guarantee either way, and anyone promising a specific score increase is misleading you.

Do you store my credit report?+

Your PDF is parsed and your Social Security number is redacted entirely in your browser — the raw file never leaves your device. Your account stores your analyses, your (edited) findings, and your generated letters so you have a history — and you can delete any of it, or your whole account, anytime from Settings. Only redacted text is ever sent to our AI provider.

Is this really free? What's the catch?+

The Free plan is genuinely free — no credit card, no trial timer. The catch is the quota: 1 dispute package per month. Paid plans raise the limits. You'll also pay postage yourself (certified mail — check current USPS rates; it's your legal proof of delivery).

How long does the whole process take?+

About 5 minutes to create your account and generate your letters. Once mailed, federal law gives bureaus 30 days from receipt to complete their investigation (45 days in some cases, e.g. if you send additional information mid-investigation). Your tracker counts down from your mailing date.

What if the bureau says the item was “verified”?+

That's round one, not the end. You can demand to know how they verified it — a Method-of-Verification request under FCRA §611(a)(7) — and they must describe their procedure within 15 days. You can also dispute directly with the creditor that reported the item (§623) or file a CFPB complaint. DisputeKit generates all three.

Can I just dispute on my own for free?+

Yes — absolutely. It's your federal right under FCRA §611, and you never need to pay anyone to do it. DisputeKit just removes the hard parts: finding what's disputable, citing the right law, using verified bureau addresses, and tracking the 30-day clock.

What happens to my data if I cancel a paid plan?+

Your account drops to the Free plan; your letters and history stay accessible within Free-plan limits. Nothing is deleted on cancel — only if you choose “Delete account” in Settings.
